Katsuk is expecting! This will be Katsuk's last litter and I hope she will produce several girls this time after a litter with a heck of a lot of boys last time:-) I would love a Katsuk daughter for my pack. Katsuk is a very well built female with a solid body, an amazing chest, and a super temperament to go along with her good looks. She has her CGC, TT ( Temperament Test), and TDI ( Therapy Dog International) titles as well as a grand Championship. I have been pleased with her puppies from her previous litters and can't wait to see these babies!!

A naked Katsuk shows off her nice body:-) She is a big girl- normally 70lbs. She was a chunky 74 in this pic but soon lost the weight with some sledding/scootering. A girl has to be fit before being bred!!

Katsuk has a nice, though somewhat masculine head. Several times in the ring we were told "males to the front" and I had to tell the judge she was a bitch or the judge reached back to feel testicles. She was always so much bigger than the other females.

This is the daddy-to-be and his family. Jack is a very sweet, young male who loves everyone and everything...though you can see by this photo that he REALLY loves the cat:-) Jack does 4H with his boys and won ribbons in agility and conformation this year at fair. He is a great family dog.

GRCH Hurricane Katsuk Rainsong CGC TT TDI has been bred to Sugar River Jackjumper Song. I am keeping my finger's crossed for a nice large litter of pups. Both parents are super sweet and outgoing so I am expecting some wonderful temperaments and good size. Pups are expected in early march.

I have been fostering a litter of pups for Hurricane Chinooks and all of them found homes except Miss Pink. I had 3 applicants for her but none of them were the right home so she is still here with me. Miss Pink is being placed as a pet but she is very well built so she should be fine for anyone who wants a strong working dog. She is quite large for a girl with a wide chest, big bone, and very large thigh muscles- she is very sweet and outgoing in temperament and is not hyper but not lazy. She is very much a middle of the road, easy puppy.

My Irish Water Spaniel Faethe gave birth to 8 pups, a week early, on the same day my Chinook whelped! The pups were very vigorous and good sized but we lost a female pup a few days later. The remaining 7 pups are very healthy and happy. Faethe is an excellent mom with a lot of milk. The girl pups on day one

Kila is in season now and is going to be bred to Cloudburst Railrun Luca.
Kila is a very outgoing, sweet, and friendly girl. She loves everyone and everything. Here she is babysitting my friends American Staffordshire Terrier puppy.

Kila is a very solid, well built girl. She has a lot of size and substance and while she has not shown in the ring, she has been evaluated very highly by several UKC and AKC Judges.

The previous pictures have made Kila seem so serious! She is not a serious girl. 90% of the time she is happy, bubbly, and ready for play. The other 10% of the time she is sleeping or about to fall asleep.

Water Spaniel news!

Faethe (aka Whistle Stop's Oidhche Shamhna) finished her AKC Championship to become my first AKC Champion!! I have finished my Chinooks in UKC but they were only recently AKC recognized so my Irish Water Spaniel and now my Saluki were my first experiences with AKC dogs. Now I enjoy doing AKC with all my dogs and I look forward to many more AKC Champions! This is not the most exciting news though. Faethe has been bred to CH Whistle Stop's Venetor (AKA Orion). This breeding is being done in conjunction with WhistleStop Irish Water Spaniels and will carry the Whistlestop name.

Faethe is phenomenal with children and she does 4H with a young girl that does not have a dog of her own. Faethe is very patient, calm, and loves everyone. She has many fans.

I love the Water Spaniel topknot. It usually falls on both sides of the face so she has unrestricted vision but I brushed it down for this picture. No red eye when there are no eyes!

Unlike my Chinook litters, IWS pups look identical! rickrack or puppy collars are a must! Keeping track of identical puppy blobs seems much harder than a Chinook litter that usually has some variety in markings and/or color.

Hopefully the pups will be sweet, well tempered, well conformed, hunting dogs like both their parents.

Jiggles is hopefully going to be a dad again! He was bred last week to Noble Thunder Anna. If the breeding was successful, this will be the first litter for Paradise Chinooks in Hawaii.
Anna is very sweet and wonderful with kids. Jiggles is the same so I am expecting the pups to be wonderful companions.

Jiggles is a very handsome, athletic boy. He is a great sled dog but knows when to turn it off. He is very calm and sedate in the house. I will post an update once we learn if the breeding was successful.

Pagan ( Salish' Scimitar Devil His Due) takes Winners dog again for a 4 point major and then went on to take BOW at the Saluki Specialty last weekend! Not bad from the puppy class!! Goodbye Gambler

I was set on keeping Gambler for myself but a wonderful home came along and Gambler is now with a new owner (though Moonsong Chinooks has kept co ownership and breeding rights). He is being trained as a mobility assistance and service dog. His temperament is perfect for it and he settled in quite well. He likes being an only dog and getting all the attention- he is a huge cuddler like his dad Brett and is a 'people dog' versus a 'dogs dog' We will miss him around the house, especially his sister Bianca.

Bownstone Iditarod Trail Song (Kaltag) has found a new home with one of my co workers who also owns Bagheera from my Jungle Book litter. Kaltag, aka Kole, is going to be kept intact for breeding and showing. The family are avid hikers, campers, and snowboarders so he will be out and about often. He is a very good natured, bold boy but is the epitome of turn on and turn off. I will have to say he was the easiest puppy I ever had- in the house he was a lazy lump but when we went out he was in the pool, down the trail, and shooting all over.

Frontier litter

At the very end of April, Frontier Chinooks had a beautiful litter of 7 puppies. Sadly, 2 of the puppies did not make it but the remaining 5 pups are wonderful, tawny pups with phenominal coats and nice heads. These pics were taken when the pups were 4 weeks old. Connie Jones of WoodsRunner Chinooks flew out to visit and she walked us through a puppy eval while she was here.

Brownstone Chinooks and Moonsong Chinooks are happy to announce the breeding between Moonsong Cedar River Touchdown and Lighthouse Tillamook Rock (Dakota). I was planning on breeding Dakota to my girl Alsea but one of Alsea's littermates had a major health issue crop up and I decided to wait and to make sure Alsea and her other littermates stayed healthy. She is only 3 and can wait for her turn. Cedar is co owned by Moonsong Chinooks and resides with Kay Lee Brown of Brownstone Chinooks. She was looking for a mate and is a half sister to Alsea so it was decided Dakota will be the perfect match. Cedar has excellent movement and a calm biddible temperament. Dakota had a nice head, great substance, and an exuberant friendly disposition. I am really looking forward to these puppies!!!! Late Winter litter planned

Moonsong Chinooks is planning a Late Winter/Early Spring 2010 breeding of CH PR Laughing Mountain Alsea Song to PR Lighthouse Tillamook Rock (Dakota). Dakota lives nearby and has met with the Moonsong Chinook pack for a playdate. Alsea was instantly smitten, as were all my girls. Dakota is a large, handsome male who is very distinguished and confident. He is wonderful with children and got along with my male Chinooks. Both Alsea and Dakota have great heads. I will post more about this breeding in the coming months, as the date of the breeding approaches. For now, I am preparing for Katsuk's fall 2009 litter. Dakota has a very handsome head

Yeah, Katsuk is Pregnant!! The vet confirmed that she is expecting a medium sized litter( around 5 or so) at the end of September. I am very excited that Katsuk is having puppies. Not only is she an exceptional Chinook but the sire was neutered after they were bred and this will be his only litter. Late summer/fall in Washington is very nice- not too hot, not yet the rainy season- it is a great time to raise puppies.

It has been a busy summer for Moonsong Chinooks. I am now the Chair of the Standard and Judge's education Committee of the Chinook Club of America. The Chinook appeared in Dog Fancy magazine causing a large bump in inquiries about the breed. Jiggles is a new father to 3 pups born to Rain Mountain Chinooks http://www.rainmountain.net/ and he also finished his Grand Championship at the Washington Classic over the 4th of July weekend. Katsuk was bred to PR Rain Mountain Nakani last week and is hopefully expecting a litter. I am looking forward to the pitter patter of puppy feet this fall.

Katsuk is looking forward to having puppies- she loves being a mom Here is the sire. Baxter will be neutered in a couple weeks so this is his only chance for pups. I like Baxter's sire, Bannack, and I am happy I can bring his genes into the Moonsong breeding program The Moonsong pack enjoys a lazy moment on the deck It has been a record summer for heat in seattle. Jiggles is going to be a dad!

Moonsong Chinooks is very pleased to announce that CH Moonsong Mukilteo Bluejay ( aka Jiggles) is going to be dad. This is the first litter that will be produced from a dog bred by Moonsong Chinooks. I have been in Chinooks for over 9 years but I started out with male dogs that I stood at stud. Some of my stud fee pups have gone on to produce litters but these dogs carried the name of the kennel that bred them. ( For example CH PR SpringCreek Lambeau Leap is my dog, produced by my stud Tay and was given to me as payment for Tay's services, but was bred by Springcreek Chinooks).

CCA elections

The Chinook Club of America is holding elections and I have decided to throw my hat in the ring, running for Chair of the Standard and Judges Education Committee. I would love to give back to the breed that has given me so much. I have served on committees in the Chinook Club of America ( CCA), the Chinook Owners Association ( COA) and the former Chinook Dog Club of America (CDCA). The biography for the ballots needed to be quite short so I am going to use this post to talk a bit about myself. For those non CCA members and those uninterested in the election, my previous Current Events posts start at the bottom of this page

Chinooks have been in my life since 1999, after finding out about them on the internet. There was a local Chinook gathering near my house and I instantly fell in love with the breed. I acquired my first Chinook in 2000 and never looked back. I have bred 4 litters under the Moonsong Chinook name as well as standing several wonderful males at stud. I have owned and bred Champions, Grand Champions, and Top Ten finishers. My dogs also have Weight Pull titles and compete in Obedience as well as sledding, biking, and scooter races. I love to show but my passion is sledding. It is so peaceful to run down the trail with a team of Chinooks and I enjoy having dogs that excel in the ring but also excel in harness. My goal for breeding is to produce triple purpose sledding and show dogs that are, above all healthy and happy family pets.

My goal for this election is to serve as chair for the Standards and Judges Education committee. I work very well with others and look forward to helping the club complete a new standard that will serve this breed well as we move into AKC. I feel Judges Education is also very important as the Chinook is a rare breed and not known to many in the AKC world. I have met many AKC judges and breeders in the course of my work at the Academy of Canine Behavior and also at AKC shows where I have handled my Irish Water Spaniel and Saluki. I have been lucky enough to attend many great seminars over the years, including the K9 College Cruise, which I try to do every year or so. I have studied Canine conformation and movement, breeding, history, nutrition, training, behavior, showing, judging, genetics, and health. I attended Kansas State University and I have a degree in Animal Science from the State University of New York. I currently serve on the Standard and Judges Education committee as well as the Show, Trial, and Trail committee. I have been mentored by several longtime Chinook breeders and I also have a good relationship with many of the newer Chinook owners/breeders. I would enjoy the opportunity to contribute to the Chinook breed as we enter these exciting times.

AKC Sanction B Match

In March 2009, there was a sanction B match in Enumclaw. It was the first time Chinooks were able to show in an AKC match in Washington. It was a fun day as 9 Chinook fanciers and 15 Chinooks enjoyed a day of showing and comraderie. Some pictures of the day are below.

Ranger and Oscar look for treats. Ranger and Oscar are half brothers, sired by CH Channahon's Northern Kodiak. The best puppy, Watson, is also a Kodiak pup. There are only three pups by Kodiak in Washington but they look to be three very nice boys who should do well in the ring this year.

Sugar River Jackjumper Song joined the Moonsong pack on the same day my Deadliest catch pups were leaving for new homes. He was sent by his breeder to the west coast in order to maximize genetic diversity in the breed.
